Taiwanese firm to debut water-resistant apparel line

2013-5-27
Taiwan-based Everest Textile Co. has announced that it would be using the carboxylic acid-based water resistance additive – C4, developed in association with US-based 3M, in its own apparel line.

The firm said that it would launch a personalized clothing line, imbued with the new additive, according to The China Post report.

C4 is a result of several years of research, Everest Textile said. The original version of the additive was called C8, but the same was withdrawn in 2002, as 3M ascertained that it left behind residues that were dangerous for health.

Again a second version of the additive called C6 was developed, but this version too did not fully address the safety concerns, causing the firm to continue its research.

Finally, in 2009, 3M came up with C4, a safer version of the additive, which Everest says is free from chemicals Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) or Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), which are both considered to be harmful toxins that take several years to break down in human body.

With its high water resistant and anti-staining properties, C4 turns out to be one of the best toxin-free additives, finding utility in several apparel applications like outdoor and sportswear, Everest said and added that apparels instilled with the new additive are highly breathable.

Everest said it has already bagged a good number of orders for the water-resistant apparel line from leading global brands like A&F, Polo and Ralph Lauren.

It added that its manufacturing facilities in China and Thailand have started delivering positive results, and are expected to boost the company’s revenues by 10-20 percent.
